Event Targeting With Twitter

Ever had your favorite show ruined by a trending topic on Twitter? You know, you click on the hash tag of last night's live tweeted episode and spoil every detail for yourself. It was your own fault, we all know that.

Well that, my friend, is an example of a Twitter event. Same with your friends who used that hashtag during the wedding, the Super Bowl, or anything that is live tweeted whether it is popular enough to trend or didn't quite catch on.

Why do we need to know this? Twitter just released a way to promote during live events which could seriously improve social media advertising on the platform.

The information collected on Twitter in real-time is so abundant and necessary that even Nielsen uses it to rate TV shows

The Details

With event targeting, you can activate around live moments, quickly and easily. We’ll help you discover and plan for these moments, learn more about the participating audiences through valuable insights, and with one click, create a campaign that delivers the right message to just the right users as the event unfolds.

Twitter will use a 3-piece tool that will allow for a campaign targeting the live events including a calendar, insights, and activation.

Calendar

The calendar will display major events from around the world which will give marketers insight into what is happening when and where. This will include:

Events

  • Sports
  • Holidays
  • Festivals
  • Television
  • Music
  • Politics

Countries

  • United States
  • United Kingdom
  • France
  • Brazil
  • Japan

Filters

  • Location
  • Date

Insights

Twitter's Event Insights

Found the perfect event? How do you know who would participate? That is where 'Insights' comes into play. This will provide the previous year's demographic data based on:

  • Audience Reach
  • Device Useage
  • Gender
  • Highest engaged Tweets

Although targeting insights will focus on historical data, ads — in the form of promoted tweets — will be pushed only to people who are engaged with the current event, said Ameet Ranadive, Twitter’s senior director of revenue products.

Activation

The third piece of Twitter's advertising feature allows you to launch a campaign with just one click.

Once you’ve researched your event audience, you can create a campaign targeting the events of your choice with just one click. Event targeting can be combined with other key targeting types like gender, language and device so you can reach the right segment of an event audience.

Advertising On Twitter

While Twitter can be a huge success organically, this gives us even more reason to use their advertising feature. Picture advertising during the Super Bowl for a few dollars compared to the millions spent on a TV spot.
