Overseeing the Digital Economy: EU fines Google $5.1 billion

The European Union is fining Google $5.1 billion in Android antitrust case. What does this mean for your business? With the US’s large hands-off approach, this has caused an uproar in Google’s favoring toward large American tech firms such as their Android services.

This week, Google was fined for abusing its power in the mobile phone market. This aggressive approach is making efforts to regulate Google’s unfair favoring of their own services popping up in internet search results. New regulations would loosen the grip google has over its android services, which are used in 80% of the world’s smartphones. Creating a chance for competing services to show up in search engine results.

Why it Matters

Google is using Android as a tool to dominate its search engine without the chance of competing products. When Google favors their own services in search engine results, it automatically knocks the competition to lower rank. Leading to less page views, app ranks and downloads. This practice harms the success of competition and creates a hegemonic power over the mobile phone internet search.

The European Union request that in 90 days, regulators to undercut Google’s ability to automatically include its own search and other apps in mobile devices, opening it to more competition in a market that it has dominated.

No more Suffering

If your app didn’t perform with a Google service, your business could have been suffering. With new regulations, competitors with creative and innovative ideas can have the chance to compete with dominating forces.

Sometimes, being a part of a large tech firm is suitable for business success. Never forget about the underdogs willing to take many steps to start their own platform who at first, cannot get recognized.

Google’s success will never fail, but regulators are keeping them controlled to ensure a free market with optimal chance.
