How often should you blog?

No, blogging isn't dead! Creating blogs is still very much profitable, but the way we approach blogging has changed. Incorporating social media-driven strategies will have users engage with the blog and make profitable impacts. The real question is, how often should you post new content?

Believe it or not, most people will unsubscribe from a blog if they post too much. Who wants that many notifications throughout the week?

The latest trends show bloggers don’t publish posts as often as they used to. Whereas they used to publish several times a week, they now publish several times a month.

More than 2 billion blog posts were published worldwide in 2018. That’s 5,760,000 blog posts per day, and 4,000 blog posts per minute.

Today, at the exact time this article was written there were 3,634,548 blog posts made. To be honest, this number changes every second and could reach upward of 6-7 million per day.

Key Factors

A blogging schedule depends on a few key factors:

  • Blog topic

  • Blog length

  • Audience (specifically engaging audience)

  • The overall goal of the target audience

  • Personal schedule

Blog Topic - Too many people focus on telling people "do this" or "do that" rather than trying to create engagement to help sustain the article.

The topics leading the way in strong results are guides, ebooks, original research, and infographics.

If you are posting daily news, your schedule will look more fast-paced with urgent/shorter descriptions. When describing how something works or showing original research, the content will take longer to develop and result in more spaced-out blog posts.

On the other hand, if you are showcasing your recent work for a client then a few posts a month will suffice.

Try this: Starts with the topic of curated expertise and throw in an opinion. Rather than the normal A + B = C, you can now showcase the result while explaining the outcome in your own words/reasoning.

Blog Length - The average time a creator spends on curating a blog is 3 hours and 57 minutes.

Bloggers who spend more time researching and developing content generate stronger results.

Obviously, it depends on if creating blog posts is the number one priority or if it's more of a side hustle to aid in developing traffic for your website. Soley being a blogger should provide enough explanation that you will be creating more content than others.

This doesn't necessarily mean you have to post every day but the length of the content provided for certain topics should be there. Longer, more thorough, and precise explanations of a topic will develop a repertoire.

Try this: Create two compelling articles based on your standard content, but make one a short read and the other longer. Now, you can analyze the average session duration per article to see who is intrigued and who left the page. From there, deciding content length will help establish shorter, but more frequent articles or longer, spaced out blogs.

Audience - Creating content for a specific audience can help keep you on track.

Creating "How To" posts requires more time and effort and users will appreciate the detail.

The key factor is the part of the audience that actually engages with your blog. Whether that be through social media links at the bottom of the blog or even the comment sections, these are the people that require attention.

This could take some time to understand, but as mentioned before, people do not want to be bombarded with emails multiple times a day about new posts. Especially during work hours where attention to detail is minimal given the exhaustion from work.

Try this: Pay attention to what days your audience engages the most with your post (including social accounts) and develop a schedule based on theirs. This might be once a week or even a Monday, Wednesday, Friday consistent post scheduled. Hear that? Consistent.

Overall Goal - What’s the point in creating the content if no one is going to read it?

You’ve put all this time and effort into your blog, don’t forget to put effort into sharing on social media.

Let's dig a little deeper. By spending less time on the content of the blog, you can spend more time sharing the article to generate more traffic and vice versa. This means that you can either crank out more blog posts per week and have a bit of trouble figuring out where to share the posts, or you can develop solid and consistent content and REALLY focus on putting the blog in front of people to read it.

Try This: Give people a reason to keep following. Try to always incorporate a link to Instagram or maybe a newsletter in each blog post to dominate more than one medium. Also, try to find a new sharing platform to showcase your blog every month to generate new leads.

To increase your traffic, you may want to publish more often since that’ll give search engines more opportunities to find your site and bring visitors to it.

Recap

Everyone's posting schedule will be different depending on your blog topic, length, audience, and overall goals. Determining a specific frequency is not a one-size-fits-all solution but rather a factor to help determine what is the most profitable.

From monetary profits to gaining exposure, there is always a variable that can be toggled to boost a statistic.

The not so simple answer is this, if you are going to be posting generic content to say you have a blog to have a blog then a few times a month is fine. If you are trying to generate a monetary income from the posts and are producing new content, then once or twice a week will be bountiful.

Organic content-filled blogs can be more sparse but a heavy following is required in order to retain excitement and attention.
