Design Trend: Summer Colours by Pantone

Adobe has teamed up with the Pantone Colour Institute to reveal which colours are trending this summer. Although the colour theory will stay, these trends can influence users, designers, and brands.

What is the Colour Theory?

If you think back to school, you'll recall being told at a young age that there are three 'primary' colours – Red, Yellow, and Blue. We are told that by combining any of these colors, in multiple quantities, we can make a new, better colour than before.

There are additive and subtractive ways of absorbing colour. Any light projected such as the sun or on a screen uses additive colour.   For mobile users, we are seeing additive color.

When using additive colour, we tend to consider the building block (primary) colours to be Red, Green, and Blue (RGB), and this is the basis for all colour you use on screen. In additive colour, white is the combination of colour, while black is the absence of colour.

The colour wheel allows us to see at a glance which colours are complementary, analogous, triadic and so on. Check it out.

Pantone’s Suggestion

Along with adobe’s finding, the hot colour trends for the summer are bold and saturated tones.

The colours in question include Lime Green, Hawaiian Ocean, Flame Orange, Fuchsia Purple, Cherry Tomato, Blazing Yellow and Dazzling Blue.

Laurie Pressman, the Institute's vice president, these tones mark a sea change in colour trends.

People are ready for a change and with these bold colours they can spark a new kind of joy and happiness this summer.

One of the key drivers behind this change is social media. Platforms give users the freedom to experiment with colours and intense experiences, which in turn leads to people gravitating towards richer sorts.

Social media is congested, so it makes sense that brighter, bolder images have been on the rise as users attempt to stand out from the crowd. With colour seen as a form of self-expression on social media, vibrant colours lead to more interaction.

This institute believes this trend will continue through summer of 2020 so there is plenty of time to hop on board.
