The Tools of Photoshop: Text Tools

Inserting text is usually a given when creating a brochure or an ad.  You have a picture in your mind of how it will look but it can be frustrating to have your end product match your vision.  Adobe Photoshop is a great tool to help bring your idea to life.

It can be intimidating to use Adobe Photoshop for the first time if you don’t know exactly what each icon does. For example, it can be a challenge to locate and identify which of the four icons to use when creating text.

Where is The Type Tool Located:

The Type Tool is located at the very bottom of the toolbar, on the left-hand side of the screen.  If the icon is selected, it will start with its display with its default setting of the Horizontal Type Tool, which is the default setting.  To bring up other additional options, left-click on the Horizontal Type Tool icon.  The menu with the following four tools selections will display:

  • Horizontal Type Tool
  • Vertical Type Tool
  • Vertical Type Mask Tool
  • Horizontal Type Mask Tool

What Each Type Tool Icon Does

Essentially, the Text Tool has the same purpose, to insert text into your product.  The only difference is in the way the text is displayed.

The Horizontal Text Tool is used to type a sentence in a horizontal fashion.

The Vertical Text Tool is used to type a sentence in a vertical fashion.

The Vertical Type Mask Tool is used to mask an image under the original layer so that appears through the image, in a vertical direction.

The Horizontal Type Mask Tool is used to mask an image under the original layer so that appears through the image, in a horizontal direction.
