Chrome’s New Web Design from a UX Perspective

Google Chrome has recently celebrated its 10th anniversary which means a redesign! Google is always adding improvements to their site, but this time we can see big changes.

Multiple improvements have been added to chromes design and as businesses, we can use these changes as a learning experience and work off this tech giant’s innovation.

Managing tabs

The organization of the app was a big topic in these developers minds and they started with managing tabs. Instead of multiple navigation paths, you can simply click on the tab bar and switch between multiples tabs. It is now easier to go between incognito, history, and tabs with a simple swipe to the left or right.

This new format allows for better reachability among users with all kinds of hands.

Measurable Design

When we speak about consistency in design, we are advocating this technique for a reason. It shows a uniform effort to create a relatable experience to all users.

Google chose to resort back to a flatter, rounder design that is more in line with Google’s Material Design principles. Menu items and website icons are now easier to see because they have been tweaked and simplified throughout the various versions of the app.

Search Improvement

The UX approach to most browsers is to have the search bar in the top of the screen, which we are used to.  It has logic behind it since we read from top to bottom and search from the top and display result right underneath of it. Of course, Google wanted to make their UX different.

Google’s design team put the search icon into the tab bar on the bottom of the screen that access a tab dedicated to a search.  This relates to reachability because the users now can quickly tap the bottom part of the screen rather than having to reach to the top to search.

Think about how you hold your smartphone, technically traditional search bar locations are in the out of reach zone.

Your turn

We always want to make our apps more intuitive and as simple as possible for our users. Focus on the element of Google simple rearranging the search icon for better reachability of the users. This simple step has improved the UX experience of many.

Make sure the most frequently interacted elements of both your app and websites are the one you focus on the most to be reachable to your users. If your goal is for them to click or tap onto a page, then make it easily accessible for them.

Blue Archer can assist you with redesign and app consultations for an interactive UX design.
