Data Visualization: A Keen Investment

Using the concept of pictures and graphs to represent data has been around for years. With the increase in technology, computers can interpret loads of data into graphs at lightning fast speed. This trend is vital for industries by combining science and art.

With masses of information floating across the web, data visualization is becoming a standard to most audiences. From business law to journalism, data visualization is a boundless tool to address large scale information to all audiences.

With presenting data, usually comes background information and research. By incorporating visual data, your audience can readily absorb the information you wish for them to process.   Our brains are hardwired to understand visuals, which makes this investment worth the time.

Make it Count

Anyone can have visuals as symbols to representing data, but if your visual is distracting and unable to be decoded by your audience then you already lost your reader. Words and paragraphs need to match the data being represented in your visual. The more difficult the data the harder it is for your audience to decipher. Take it slow, and stick to the basics.

  1. Design for a specific audience
    • Your visuals are there to reflect patterns and relationships in complex data. When designing your graph, getting across the main correlation is the most vital part of your intel. Displaying too much information can be overwhelming to your audience. If your audience tends to spend ample time on your site, then maybe add that extra data. If you attract a more casual indolent viewership’s, then a crazy graph with a mass of numbers will not only confuse them but turn them away.
  2. Focus user’s attention
    • When designing a graph, you goal should be to design the viewers focus when reading the information. Guide them along through graphics as they attempt to decipher your visuals. If you wish for them to start at one point, then make graphics and illustrations focused around that starting to point. Use lighter colors for less important information and darker for where you want your audience to focus. Same goes for size of text and graphics! You decide how your viewer reads your information so make it count.

There are many ways to structure data visualization. The best way to find what’s best for your audience is to test out multiple graphics and layouts to see which they interact with the best. Feedback is key.
