Designer’s Perspective: Are you a Taoist?

Over the years, Web and UX designers have become knowledgeable of the ancient eastern philosopher’s conclusions by studying data around good design and good living.

Philosophical Taoism

The chief goal of philosophical Taoism is to conserve life’s vitality by not expending it in the useless ways of friction and conflict. One does this by living in harmony with the Tao (way) of all things: the way of nature, of society, and of one’s self.

To combine the practices of Taoism and strategy, designers can elude peaceful behaviors. It is to be said that designers aren’t necessarily Taoist but practice the same methods.

Concepts to design and live by:

Be slow to Judge

In the practice of Taoism, the practicing of not judging is vital to living. It is said to refrain from calling anything, anyone, or any circumstance good or bad until things have had a chance to play out.

From a designer’s perspective, we should never judge our work before we have had the chance to view it in real time. This is where A/B testing comes into play with developing new concepts and design strategies. Don’t knock it before you try it.

Do things without expecting a reward

Taoism reflects that when we do good we should expect no reward, but do these actions out of pure modesty. We are all so used to receiving the recognition that we forget why we have done it in the first place.

In the design world, we are so used to hearing big names in the community who designed the mural or made the next big video. Before these people received recognition, they had to put in a lot of thankless work. Eventually, many of them receive recognition, but it’s time to focus on effort before the praise.

Don’t Struggle

The simple philosophy practiced by Taoist is to not struggle more than we have too. You can struggle to provide for your family in terms of food and necessities, but don’t struggle to be human.
We tend to over complicate things for ourselves in ways that are pointless. Designers especially feel that complex artwork will be better than the next, but that isn’t always the case. There is no need to pursue more stress when you can controllably focus on your skills at hand.

If this blog interested you, we suggest implementing these practices into your daily life as well as your employees.

Blue Archer can provide a consultation of your web design to ensure its user-friendly and not too complex.
