When making an ad or powerpoint, having the topic stand out is most important. Having it boxed or circled draws attention to what the designer wants the reader to see. Adobe Photoshop can be an important tool in making this a reality.

The Marquee Tools are one of the most basic tools of Photoshop but can be viewed as the one of the most useful. This tool can make geometric selections that can be used in many ways:

  • Cropping
  • Filling
  • Stroking
  • Making Perfect Circles, Rectangles, Lines

Locating the tool and identifying what is does can be very difficult, especially for new users.

Where are the Marquee Tools Located:

The Marquee Tools are located below the first icon on the toolbar, located on the left side of the screen. The icon appears as a default setting on the Rectangular Marquee Tool. To see other options of the Marquee tool, left-click on the Rectangular Marquee Tool. The menu bar for the four selections are:

  • Rectangular Marquee Tool
  • Elliptical Marquee Tool
  • Single Row Marquee Tool
  • Single Column Marquee Tool

What Each Tool Does:
The Marquee Tools essentially serve a common purpose; cropping, filling, stroking, and circling/boxing the desired section(s). Differences between the tools are the shapes in which they would do these actions.

The Rectangular Marquee Tool is used for making a rectangular selection.

The Elliptical Marquee Tool is used for making a circular selection.

The Single Row Marquee Tool is used to make a selection on one row of pixels.

The Single Column Marquee Tool is used to make a selection on one column of pixels.
