tech news

Happy May! I think I speak for all of Pittsburgh when I say I'd really like May to officially excommunicate any temperature below 50. Can we do that, May?

Your Friday Tech go-to,  Samantha, will be taking a break from her weekly reviews, so I am here to serve it up in her absence. Because after all - how else can you contribute to the water cooler chit chat in the IT department of your building? This past week (and last week) brought us tons of tech updates, so let's get right into it!

More Filters & a Hashtag Upgrade

People love their hashtags, and they love their emojis. And, now they can have both. At one time. That’s right; Instagram is rolling out an update that will allow users to hashtag emojis. The future is here, people.

Over the past few years, emoji have become part of a universal visual language. And just as we share photos and videos, we use emoji to communicate emotions and feelings in ways that anyone can understand, regardless of language or background.

Remember in December when Instagram gave you 5 new filters just in time for your token couple-photo in front of the tree? Well Spring has officially sprung, because you are about to make those #TBT DC Cherry blossoms pic look a whole lot trendier.

Google Glass Meets Class

Google gets it. Google Glass isn’t exactly as visually appealing as your Gucci pair (or, in my case, Target pair). That’s why Google teamed with Italian eyewear maker, Luxottica, for the newest version of Google Glass. This time, the device is setting out to improve the display, sound quality, and the general look.

Remember when Google Glass sold measly numbers to the public is 2014? And all that privacy backlash when people got wind of the fact that Google Glass wearers can take pictures and record video surreptitiously? Yeah, Google is trying to bounce back from all that.

Amazon Business: The B2B Solution

After identifying the obvious need, Amazon has finally tapped into the B2B online product marketplace. Businesses will spend trillions of dollars online over the next 5 years, so naturally Amazon said “Gimme!”.  Now, businesses will have a shopping experience that is tailored to their business needs, complete with unique shipping methods. Business accounts will also have access to thousands of products that the typical consumer account does not.

This isn’t the first time Amazon has looked to the business market.

The new marketplace is in a way an extension of the company's wholesale site Amazon Supply, except it will be much bigger, with hundreds of millions of products immediately ready for purchase.
